What is the JEE Exam?
The JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) is a national-level entrance exam held annually in India. The main purpose of the exam is to assess students’ ability in the Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics streams, aspiring to pursue graduation in engineering and architecture from prestigious institutions. Including NITs (National Institutes of Technology), IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology), IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology), and other centrally funded institutions.
Historical Context of the JEE Exam
Before 2002, the IIT-JEE exam was compulsory for admission to the top IITs. However, after that, the exam structure was slightly changed with its pattern and syllabus, which took a new look by the year 2012. Not only this, after a year, the government introduced a new pattern of exam by dividing it into two categories: JEE Main and JEE Advanced. From 2019 onwards, NTA (National Testing Agency) took the responsibility to conduct this exam throughout the year in January and April (JEE Main). Mode of JEE Exam

Eligibility Criteria For JEE Main Exam
Based on the following parameters, candidates can decide whether they are eligible for the exam or not:
1) Age Limit: There is no age limit to apply for the JEE Mains exam; however, there is a need to fulfill the age criteria of the institute to which they are willing to take admission.
2) Nationality: The candidate must be a citizen of India. However, NRI individuals can also apply for the exam.
3) Qualification: The candidate must have passed his 12th from a recognised board.
4) Required Subjects: To appear in the JEE exam, the candidate must have physics, chemistry, and mathematics as compulsory subjects in their senior secondary. To understand the proper subject division in both papers, read the following pointers:
- For JEE Main Paper 1(B.Tech): Physics and Mathematics are compulsory subjects in class 12.
- For JEE Main Paper 2A (B.Arch): Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics are compulsory subjects in class 12.
- For JEE Main Paper 2B (B.Plan): Mathematics is a compulsory subject in class 12.
5) Required Percentage: The candidates belonging to the general category must have secured a minimum of 75% marks in their class 12 board exams or rank among the top 20th percentile in the qualifying exam to get admission to IITs, NITs, IITs.
Whereas candidates belonging to the reserved category must have secured a minimum of 65% marks in their class 12 board exams to get admission to the top IITs, NITs.
6) Number of attempts: A candidate can appear for the exam 3 times in a consecutive year (starting from passing the class 12). As the exam is held 2 times a year, this means there are a total of six attempts to appear in the JEE Mains exam.
Eligibility Criteria For JEE Advanced Exam
Based on the following parameters, candidates can decide whether they are eligible for the exam or not:
1) Age Limit: The age limit for the JEE Advanced is divided based on category:
- General category students must have been born on or after October 1, 2000.
- Reserved category students have a 5-year age relaxation; i.e., they must have been born on or after October 1, 1995.
2) Nationality: The candidate must be a citizen of India. However, NRI individuals can also apply for the exam.
